In Which The New Year Blows Blustery

White holidays are back, and so begins
The long and messy slog back to the sun.
This last day of the year blasts off our skins
With bitter winds and cold. There's little fun
To be had out-of-doors tonight: streets of ice
Assure nothing but falls and crashes -- yet
I'm sure there's plenty whose pursuit of vice
And silliness will lead them out. I'll let
Them have my fun. It's home for me and mine;
Tomorrow's just another work-day. You
Who venture forth, do hoist a glass of wine
On my behalf, and I'll think of you, too,
Especially my far-flung loves. Someday
I hope to pass these times with you, some way.

Bring On The Dark

The moon's eclipsing on this solstice night?
Oh noes! Just how much darkness can we take?
We surely all shall perish from sheer fright
(Those of us whom the Great Old Ones don't bake
Into big pies for Festivus). As for
My part, a huge and blood-red, sky-borne orb
Seems emblematic of my mood. I'm sore
Of heart and mind - there's too much to absorb:
These holidays are stupid, crass and dull.
I'm longing for real winter, cold and long
And thoughtful; I appreciate the lull.
My pull towards winter I find just as strong
As e'er it was. 'Til then, I nod and sigh
And watch the silly season plod on by.

Bring On The Solstice

The solstice looms, and while I like the dark
More sun will be most welcome, I now find.
Black scenes make mirrors of my windows, stark
And merciless, reflecting me: my lined
And tired face when my workday is through,
My dull stupidity as I prepare
To leave ere sun-up ev'ry morning. Too,
Not much distracts me on my way to where
I spend the day without a window, in
A room where others dim the lights by choice.
I used to like the winter best, to grin
My way through blizzards; now I raise my voice
With all the rest: the short'ning of the days
Must end but soon! 'Tis a most ugly phase.

Bleak But Not Weak

The year runs down, and I run out of steam --
And cash -- but in the offing there's much good.
I've helped a good friend stride towards her dream
And cross my fingers for her, as I should.
My team-ups all go well, and solo work
Proceeds apace; my job is steady and
A rare security is mine -- a quirk
That almost seems obsence as, crossed the land
So many languish. I do all I may
To help, but mostly it's nowhere enough.
I know I'm not alone in trying -- hey,
This ain't the first time that times have been tough!
It's easy to lose hope this time of year,
But chances unknown may be very near.

In Which December Nights Are Chilly On A Bike

Heat up some soup! Put on the kettle, please!
A nighttime bike ride I did take, and while
I cannot say exactly I did freeze
'Twas cold enough, and this transformed my smile
To a determined rictus as I raced
Against the chill that wanted so to set
Into my bones and stay there. I outpaced
It, but just barely. It sounds nuts, I bet,
But then I ask you, why, though, should I spend
The extra money that I made tonight
On gasoline? Much rather would I send
Me to Toronto in the spring, and light
In Baltimore as well -- and yes, I know
The oil firms are still getting all my dough.

In Which Our Craftiness Is Tested, Or Brrr It's Bleeping Cold Out There

My house is warm with fam'ly, but outside
The wind roars bitterly, and it's damned cold.
When it's just me I let this matter slide,
Throw on another sweater, but, cajoled
By those I love I cranked my thermostat
Beyond the 60s. Then, 'cause there are drafts,
We nailed up a big blankie to combat
The frigid air from my back door. Such craft
As exercised here might seem to exceed
Our daily quota, but we're smarter yet!
When planning for the grocery run, indeed,
We planned for turkey soup and whatnot. Bet
We still have to go shopping Friday? No,
We roar, you cannot make us go!

In Which The Annoying Side Of Winter Comes Early

O wind, I've had enough of you. The snow
That fell so lightly last week blew away.
The trash you blew into my small yard, though,
Won't budge now. All of it is here to stay
Until I trudge outside and pry it loose
From plant stalks, branches, fenceposts - these all clutch
At what they've caught, tenaciously. Profuse
Enough, the snow we'll have -- too much,
Some folk will say -- but it at least can hide
The plastic bags and flyers, wrappers, junk
That flies around, breeze-tossed, both far and wide
Until it comes to me. Here comes a hunk
Of Taco Bell refuse right now. Come back,
Dear snow, and cover up the verve I lack.

Good Bye, Good Weather

This time last night, 'twas horizontal snow
And I could not see 'crost the street for it.
Today it's simply wind. I watch it blow
From safe inside where I shiver and sit,
(The vestiges of illness plague me still)
Behind a keyboard with a cup of tea;
I pretty sure this week is what will kill
Our Indian Summer. How long will it be
Ere just one layer of clothes will sure suffice
For bike commuting? How long till my skin
Can bare before the elements? Soon ice
Will force me to slow down; I'll pedal in
At half the speed to work, in darkness, long
Before dawn's chorus warms up its first song.

In Which It May Not Yet Be Spring

My lilacs bow like Atlas 'neath the weight
Of many inches of wet, sloppy snow.
It's far from Fortean to have, so late,
Such quantity dumped on us, but, you know
I'm really done with this. O Baltimore,
Weird city I shall visit just weeks hence,
Please tell me you shall have sunshine in store
And balmy weather. My wish is intense
To feel true springtime! But I should be glad:
The rototilling didn't go as deep
As shall be needed; moisture won't be bad
For this, our effort. Meanwhile I'll just keep
My snow boots and my shovel handy. Sigh.
Just months ago snow so gladdened my eye...

In Which My Wounded Dignity Is Soothed By The Music Of The Spheres

Spring snow is wet and sloppy, and so slick
Today's word really ought to just be "fall"
(The verb and not the season: quite some trick
To make it through the winter, almost all
Of it, and not once take a digger, but
Do so today, spectacularly, too!).
I don't mind, though; my Exoplanet nut,
Roald has set my mind at much ease through
This music that he found, for list'ning while
One gazes as the sky and contemplates
The worlds that spin out there. I have to smile
Despite this bone-deep chill. A hot bath waits
But not just yet, I'm digging all these tracks,
And it's high time I kick back and relax.

Grocery, Ah Me

Eye contact we must shun by any means;
The grocery store is certainly no place
For human moments as we shop for beans
And milk and fruit and dog food. Let no face
Make an appearance in our field of view!
So seems the modus of my fellow man
As we peruse the aisles, as we look through
The wares from which to choose. Was this the plan?
That we lapse into middle-distance stares,
Our eyes glazed over; people now no more
Than obstacles to navigate? Who cares
That human life teems by the score
And still there's loneliness. At last I meet
One pair of eyes; a smoker on the street.

In Which I Wonder At Wicked Water

Two hydrogen, one oxygen; that's all
A water molecule contains. It's just
So simple. In a cup, a pool, rainfall
It's strange enough, though still innocuous.
But should it freeze, there seems to be no end
To mayhem. People slip and cars may crash
That cross it. Then consider, too: the blend
Of alcohol and ice cubes brings on brash
And indecorous manners. But for me,
Why, water is most wicked when it hangs
As icicles from rooflines, menacing,
And looming o'er our heads in heavy gangs,
Assailants and cruel weapons both; they cling
But lightly to their perches, waiting for
A hapless soul's approach to the front door!

February

I like the snowfall, how it makes us stop,
Makes us stay where we were when it began
(If we are wise), how it can make us drop
Our plans and schemes, at least during its span
Of closed-down roads and endless, downward fall.
Late February, there's no holiday
Distracting us. It's winter, and that's all,
And it's enough. We've time in which to play
Within our minds. It's pointless to complain,
Get anxious, focus on some other place
Where we think we just really must be. Fain
We pause and contemplate th'actual space
In which we find ourselves, hemmed in by white
And drifted water, cov'ring so much blight.

In Which I Have Had To Keep My Wits About Me On My Way

Night driving is a challenge at its best,
When elements do merge, as Whitman said.
Less horrid than at sunset, when it's west
To which one has to drive into the red
And blue and grey, directly into glare.
But I was driving east; 'twas just delay
And indolence that forced me to beware
Of darkness, eighteen-wheelers, and the play
Of wind and snow and ice across the road.
At least no white-outs threatened, but snow plows
And unskilled winter drivers, these bestowed
An extra need for caution and for vows
To tarry not so long 'midst the delights
Of coffee, chess and wine, on future nights.

In Which I Believe I'm Staying In Tonight After All

Martinis with the girls, that was my plan
To celebrate what is my Friday night.
But as I find a window and I scan
The snowy streets, one fact doth come to light:
What now is fluffy snow will get packed down
By rush hour's vast herd of cars and trucks
Until quite nearly ev'ry road in town
Could double as a hockey rink. Aw, shucks.
I do have errands that had best not wait,
But they can happen ere sunset and then
It's best that I head home. T'will be too late
By then to venture safely out again.
Perhaps if holidays weren't here to cause
A surge in drunken drivers I'd not pause.

In Which I Ponder A Strange Metaphor

This morning, as I rose ere dawn, we had
A temperature of Zero Degrees "Eff"
(With emphasis on "Eff"; I won't be bad
And spell out what that stands for). Some foul theft
Of all our warmth had happened in the night,
And sunrise did not bring us more. It's cold -
More so than a well-digger's butt, all right,
As my friend Bonnie eloquently told
Her Facebook friends, which prompted a profound
Discussion, how the baseline readings came
To be established? Did one ask around
And quote well-diggers' feelings name by name?
Or was data - empirical and real
Recorded. Just how cold did each butt feel?

In Which A Flickr Pool Absolutely Makes My Day

I deeply miss the grasshoppers who flit
Around the Greenway as I pedal through
Their congeries in summer. Sometimes it
Was my best moment all day. How I rue
Their passing and the odd mantid who hid
Among them. But today I found this pool
With help from Bug Girl - she's the one who did
Call my attention to it. All my cool
Escaped me in one squee to look at these:
So many origami arthopds!
E'en entophobes among you, if you please
Will find one to delight you. Oh, ye gods!
The internet's a true, great treasure chest.
But I love all the insect pr0n the best.

In Which I Cry Uncle

I couldn't find it, deep beneath the snow
The feeder that the birds and wind knocked down
And buried sometime during last night's blow.
I'm sure it's much the same all over town.
My pupils down to pinpoints in the glare,
My fingers freezing in their gloves, I tried
To dig a path for postmen, cars - I care
That people try to do their jobs despite
Conditions. They were pitiful enough,
My efforts; I could not sustain too much,
Could not draw breath sufficient for the tough,
Laborious removal of, as such
A day's and night's accumulation. I'm
Still dizzy as I type out this here rhyme.

In Which A Snowy Day Sets Me To Dithering

Contrary impulses have seized me, and
I'm transfixed, by the window, in their grips.
I still am sick, could barely lift a hand
To heave and shovel snow - though it's the hips
And legs that should do that work - yet I would
So dearly like to go play in that fresh, white
Inviting snow. My skis are - to the good -
In Saratoga, so that's out. All right
But just a walk? A bike ride? A quick romp
With Molly in the park? I really ought
To stay home and get well at last. I stomp
An angry foot at this, though. Yes, I've got
A poor track record, being sick and then
Undoing efforts to get well again.

In Which Wintry Weather Makes Me Reflect

I am no Bonaparte; my armies fight
Their best in winter's snows and wind and cold.
Alone I stand out in the freezing night
And look up at the stars and feel how old
This world is and is not. Dichotomies
Like these are occupying me of late.
I'm of the cast of mind such that it please,
Not anger me to sit and contemplate,
While crystals made of ice pummel and sting
My face, how things and people never are
As simple as they seem. Each little thing
They do results from infinite, bizarre
Tempestuous processes, chaos-tossed
Until at last they're frozen fast as frost.
