In Which I Try To Say Good-Bye To Max Bell

I knew the day would come when we would reach
For our friend Max, and he would not be there.
That day has come, it seems, and now we each
Must find the words -- they're all we have to share.
I've braced myself to feel his absence, yet
E'en so, I was not ready. It's a cheat.
I can't recall what we last spoke of, bet
'Twas something mordant, funny, even sweet
(For, snarky though he often was, his heart
Dictated kindness, even when the dumb
Just burned). I'll deeply miss him, for my part --
Or will when I am over feeling numb
And empty. Ev'ry day's a touch more dim
And more so now, with no comment from him.

In Which I Take My Last Road Trip Over The Range

The road will likely close soon for the year,
Wyoming 130 across the Range
Called Snowy, and it will do so, I fear
Before I may return to it. So strange
Today to see the aspens' hues in gold
And snow accumulated on the ground.
This last trip's memories will have to hold
Me till next spring. I rolled my windows down
Despite the cold, to let in those last smells
For my and Molly's pleasure, let my eyes
Go all unshaded, killed the radio. Spells
Of purest bliss would take me. Such good-byes
Are for all of the senses. But hellos
Await me, too, ahead, in winter's snows.

To Be A Way-Station For Friends On The Road Is Another Great Reason To Be A Homeowner!

Another reason that I love my pad
Occurred this week. I had a house guest, who
Is not related to me. I was glad
To put up an old friend, just passing through.
He stayed for just one night. We dined and talked;
And reminisced on old pals. It was good.
He met a newer friend of mine; we walked
Our silly dogs through my new neighborhood
And in the morning, much to my delight
He tuned up Deep Blue so he's at his best
For summer rides (Deep Blue is my dear bike),
Then said good-bye and left for the Midwest,
His destination Brooklyn and beyond.
Farewell, dear Adam, of whom I am fond.
