Score 44 For The Border War

It almost didn't happen, but we got
As football rivalries go this is not
So famous as some others, but we shout
As though it were -- in truth, though, we've both sucked --
But someone had to win and yay, it's us!
As might be said, those Cowboys really bucked
The sheep this year, and that is worth a fuss
As you Wyoming fans all prove it's true
That if we only beat one team it's best
If it is Brigham Young or CSU.
Tonight in Laramie, the wild wild west
Will live again. My sister must regret
She chose the Boise State game, I just bet...

In Which Group C Sure Do Love To Draw

Nine games so far have ended in a draw
In this World Cup 2010. The most
Have been in one group. Has there been a flaw
Exposed in planning? No: too soon to roast
The FIFA body, though the referees
Are cruising for a scolding. Ever thus
Goes sport. 'Tis why I usually say "Please,
Just count me out" when someone makes a fuss
About a chance to watch it. This is my
One great exception. Though so far it's not
Too pulse-pounding -- Oh look, another tie!
Group C is not the only one we've got.
Tomorrow, Ghana and the Socceroos
Or other matches may yet chase my blues.

A P.E. Flunkee's Visit To A Gymnastics School

A skill I never had's in practice here.
These earnest children tumble, twirl and turn --
The elders even fly! This is no mere
Diversion. I see Bethany and learn.
I love the pride on Bonnie's daughter's face,
A run of cartwheels now beneath her belt,
Well executed, at an even pace.
Accomplishment's a thing I never felt
Upon the mats in element'ry school.
For me, this sport brought on a sense of shame;
In mind quite sound, in body such a fool
I felt an utter failure at this game --
And never even saw that it is one.
Say nothing of the thought it might be fun.

In Which I Get Excited Over A Tournament Draw

No sports fan am I, save for this one round
Of football games that make of me a nut:
The FIFA World Cup. No way I have found
Has ever kept me out of this one rut.
'Tis only ev'ry four years this occurs,
When I become a lunatic. Today
Preliminary groups were drawn, which spurs
My craziness. England v. USA?
The Germans and the Aussies? Oh my head
Already spins. Brazil and Portugal
Are in a group together, "of the dead"
And though Croatia won't be at the ball
I still feel now the ghost of my old craze.
One hundred eighty seven more short days!

In Which A Weird Co-Twit-cidence Has Me Flabbergasted

Baton-twirlers have nothing on this guy,
Josh Womack, with his mad bat-ninja skills!
My gosh, the torque he somehow doth apply
To make that bat spin. It gives me the chills,
And I'm not very much a baseball fan.
But freakish talent grabs me every time,
As freak coincidences also do. Oh man!
Somehow my fav'rite writer, one whom I'm
Quite proud to name as William Gibson, found
Me passing on a tweet about this clip,
And made the choice to pass it all around.
It's called re-tweeting, and it's quite a trip,
When someone I admire deigns to see
And geek on something that's deligthed me.

In Which I Ponder The Fairness Of Horse Trading

I'm not a big sports fan, ev'ryone knows --
But even I know when to cry out foul
(With help from Kris and Kevin). I oppose
This trading of Jay Cutler, join the howl
Of disapproval of this trade (though I've
A tiny snarky smile)! The drama of
Who didn't get along with whom -- I strive
To keep from laughing out loud, for all love --
They sound like spoiled, squabbling kids and one
Just picked up all his toys and went to find
Some other kids to play with. I'm 'bout done.
The Denver Broncos only cross my mind
When they've done something stupid anyway --
So really this is just another day.
