You're in a cave, it's dark, what will you do?
GET LAMP, that's what! This film both made me smile
And stirred old wistfulness; the timeline through
Which we are taken largely took place while
Computers were unheard of where I dwelt
(Excepting those typesetting beasts employed
By newspapers). You'd best believe I felt
Deprived as I read how others enjoyed
Computer gaming in those early days,
How stories weren't just read but lived by those
Who solved their puzzles in ingenious ways,
How smart people were having fun! "But," crows
My fav'rite pusher "It is not too late!
(I paraphrase)" And thus he's sealed my fate.

In Which I Lament Something That Is Lacking In Summer 2010
July's begun, a time when many seek
Surcease from scorching in the cool and dark
Of friendly local cinemas. I weep,
Though, as I once again survey the stark
And hopeless offerings for these great screens
This season's bringing. This year, there's not one,
I care to see at all. Some say this means
I'm just too picky; no, I have some fun
At stupid 'splodey blockbusters, as long
As they have ought to recommend them save
A bloated budget. Is it just so wrong
To want a story with what goobers crave
(A lot of CGI, they guess). I rue
This year. I think I'll stick to Doctor Who.

In Which I Lose My Mind But Gain More Time Sinks
I'm told I have a tendency to spin
Scenarios with little data, so
I should not be surprised that I am in,
Hip-deep, a new obsession. We all know
I'm prone to those as well, so, no surprise
When someone turned me on to these new games,
These interactive fictions, a few tries
Had me quite hooked. Rejoicing in such names
As "Jigsaw", "Edifice" and "Fragile Shells"
And puzzling me at ev'ry turn, these things
Have eaten up my brain for longer spells
Than any have in months. It's running rings
'Round bad TV and neuroscience class
In my obsession race. I hope to pass!

In Which I Enjoy My Easily Amused Birdie Brain
American Tree Sparrows like to hang
Around the cheap tube feeder just outside
My window, and they, too, like to harangue
Me when the feeder's empty, though they hide
When I come out to fill it. Once a day
At least, I find they've eaten all, or spilled
The seed I've poured inside it. I obey
Their shrill demands, because I'm really thrilled
To watch them so cavort where I can see
Them at their birdie doings all day long.
I know the show they put on's not for me
Expressly, but I ask you, what is wrong
With staring out my window, oh, for hours?
When spring comes then I'll also watch the flow'rs.

With Thanks to my Mother for Showing Me These Time Sinks
I never thought that I would see a fish
Suspended from a tree or picture frame.
But then one day I made a fateful wish
Online and found a hidden object game.
Nor did I think I'd lose so damned much time
Just sitting there and staring at the screen.
But now, alas, just such a fate is mine.
I scrutinize and squint at every scene
Trying to find the necklace and skateboard,
The mushroom and the chainsaw and the bed.
A mass of vines may just conceal a gourd,
But then again, perhaps a monkey's head...
Insomnia finds me often, but it seems
I've found a substitute for my missed dreams.
